IC Information
Character Name: Marta Lualdi
Character Canon: Tales of Symphonia 2: Dawn of the New World (OU)
Character Age/Gender: 16
Canon Point: Post-game, Perfect Ending.
Character Canon History: First game synopsis. Marta's game's synopsis.

Marta is the daughter of Brute Lualdi and an unnamed woman. She was an only child, and by Brute, a descendant of the fallen Sylvarant Dynasty from several hundred years ago. They lived a peaceful life in Palmacosta until the Great Tree spiraled out of control and wrecked the city, which killed Marta's mother in the process. After that, Brute and Marta wandered extensively, surveying the state of the world. Brute eventually decided to start the Vanguard in order to give Sylvarant a united government, like Tethe'alla. He thought it would give them an edge. However, he was led astray by his grief and madness and corrupted by a Centurion's core. Fearing for what her father might do, Marta stole Ratatosk's core and fled. As the Vanguard proceeded with their plans, it was Lloyd who saved her from being killed-- something she still doesn't know.

And then the game happened.

Character Personality:
Marta is at once headstrong, humble, independent and dependent. The way she dances around topics sometimes makes her come off as mysterious or just plain annoying. She often tosses up a façade of flirtatiousness to distract from the matter at hand, though she admits that she alternates between being too serious or "too much", and seeks to change herself though she doesn’t know how. Marta can also fly off the handle when she feels she or those she cares about have been wronged somehow, though this is often followed by guilt; she dislikes losing control immensely.

She isn’t as naïve as she looks. Determination is in her name and every action-- she’s the daughter of the leader of the Vanguard, after all. Despite loving her father, Marta was driven by her own sense of right and wrong to leave him behind. She wasn’t sure of where she was going at the time, but she knew that she had to do something, and she would never be able to face herself if she denied what the Vanguard and her father had become.

While traveling with Emil, she was touched by his blind kindness, even to people who should have been enemies. Though sometimes she didn’t understand his stubborn refusal to acknowledge the facts in front of him, she secretly admired his ability to appreciate the grayness in people, since she had a tendency to jump to conclusions herself—at least in the beginning. Inherent in Marta is a sense of justice, even if she has to fall beneath that as well. Marta explains her plans to dissolve what’s left of the Vanguard in her father’s absence and atone—most likely in prison—for the crimes of all the Vanguard.

She knows the cynical truth of the military and people in general, though she isn’t beyond giving people a chance. When she first meets Colette, Marta pushes her and yells at her for killing her mother. Later on, she made it clear that she couldn't quite forgive Colette but she knew it wasn't something she wanted to happen, because Colette is a good person. Also, Marta initially expresses reservation around half-elves, yet desperately wants to like Raine and Genis. Prejudice is wrong and she knows it. She also reprimands Emil for taking out his anger on people who don’t deserve it.

Marta really does have a loving side, and when she loves, she loves with all of her being. She’ll defend her friends fiercely, once willingly offering herself to the Church of Martel to save Emil and his hometown, despite barely knowing him at the time. She demonstrates a fierce loyalty to protect him and look out for his best interests, even if it makes her a bit rude or paranoid sometimes. But she comes to understand him better than anyone else. Whether Emil is being too hesitant and waffling or too angry and harsh, Marta serves as his foil and his keeper. In spite of her own fits of temper and saccharine advances, Marta provides more than just support in battle; she encourages Emil to stand up for himself and do what is right, and that no matter what happens or who he becomes, she’ll never leave him.

"Who", indeed. Of everyone present during the last part of the game, Marta is the only one who doesn’t want Ratatosk to disappear, acknowledging before Emil himself that Ratatosk is a part of Emil and shouldn’t be sealed away. It’s the same as killing him. Marta understood that, and already loved every inch of him... even the inches that claimed they wanted humanity to be destroyed. She would set him straight, just like she tried to set herself straight when it came to hatred.

Though she acts tough at times, Marta is afraid of being alone. It didn't stop her from leaving the Vanguard, but she is so much stronger when she has someone else watching her back. As an only child with a doting father, it's no wonder that she places extraordinary value in her bonds with others. She is eventually able to face her fears, carrying her memories of Emil deep in her heart so that she can move on.

Early impressions of Marta might give the wrong idea. Though she seemed clingy and co-dependent to a fault, she's capable of making her own decisions and standing by herself. Her determination in Emil's absence, regardless of which ending, is testament to that. The journey has made her a mature girl who is optimistic without turning a blind eye to problems, a girl who understands the values of acceptance and change. Trusting in her partner's wishes and her new friends, she takes the steps she must in order to ensure a better world.

Character Abilities: Artes link.

Marta fights with a spinner attached to her wrist. She is agile but doesn't hit as hard as frontline characters. Like Regal, her fighting style incorporates 'chi' blasts, but her ability to cast magic is never explained. Seeing as Derris-Kharlan is gone, Aionis treatment is out of the picture... which leaves the possibility of elven blood. We never see her mother or hear any personal details about her besides the flower hair clips, and canonically people assume Kratos and Zelos have elven blood because they can cast magic.

She has some special support skills like 'Concentrate' which were formerly only accessible to Exsphere users in the first game. Most likely she is given power by her partnership with Ratatosk; she's able to hold her own against Exsphere users without too much trouble.

Character Inventory: The clothes on her back, her spinner, an angel bracelet, 1500 gald, a handful of healing gels, and that's it.
Samples: Tales DR post! And here is a test drive thread for good measure.

It was a nice day in Altamira, though Altamira rarely received nasty weather. The world was so beautiful, so blue. The ocean stretched out endlessly from every angle of the sandbar. It looked inviting to Marta, who hadn't had much time for leisurely swimming in... longer than she cared to admit. Still, she stalked the boardwalk alone and in thought, hands clasped behind her back. She was here to visit with Regal, but last-minute business had claimed him first. She had to wait.

That was fine, really. Being here made her terribly nostalgic.

From this spot, she could see a girl and boy playing in the sand. She smiled and leaned over the wall to watch them. They were too far away for her to catch any specific words. Marta giggled to herself as the girl smacked her companion with a sand shovel. It reminded her of... well, it reminded her of Emil. He never really knew what his buttons were, let alone someone else's, and it made their short time together fun and unpredictable. She glanced down at her white-gloved fingers splayed across the sandy bricks. As countless times before, she imagined a darker hand covering them, and smiled softly.

She wasn't the only one who had to say goodbye to a friend. Her time with the heroes of world regeneration reminded her of that. With the absence of her perfect partner, it seemed like the Chosen's companions made an unspoken effort to contact her, to make sure Marta didn't get lost in the cracks somewhere and have her work forgotten. It was heartening.

A part of her still grieved for a future in which things could have turned out differently, but she was stronger than that grief. They all were. Despite their separate paths, they all reached out to one another, filling the hole in their lives with so much love.

It was no wonder that Lloyd and his friends had saved the world. And with their help, Marta and Emil had saved the world a second time.

I should also note that Kratos doesn't make a proper appearance in the second game and is only anonymously mentioned in one skit. Yuan and Emil are able to share a brief word with him via weird technology bullshit, but Marta doesn't know about his existence, and Kratos himself won't take any interest in her.
